We know how cold our Michigan winters can get. Here are some helpful hints to protect your auto and home.
Like most of us, vehicles do not like the cold weather. It is always a good idea to make sure you are taking car of your vehicle. Keep them full of fluids such as oil, gas, antifreeze and windshield wiper fluid. While under the hood, make sure your battery is clear of corrosion and the cables are in place.
Before driving down the road, please make sure your vehicle is cleared from snow, ice and frost. It is dangerous to drive with out a clear view of the road and other vehicles. Also, make sure your headlights and license plates are cleared off as well.
Homes are at risk of the water pipes freezing and/or bursting. Protect the pipes by opening up your cabinet doors under your sinks, insulating them, or even running the faucet at a slow drip will help keep the water circulating. Locate your water main cut off valve just in case.
You should have your furnace regularly inspected by a professional. The air filter should also be replaced as needed (monthly/yearly) as dust and other particles can accumulate.
If you have a fireplace, clean the flute and chimney. Clear the base of ashes or any other debris. Be sure to keep a fire extinguisher handy and filled at all times.

When you own a home, we know there are many concerns and “what ifs”. What if your underground pipes freeze that connect to your home? Or what if there is a power surge that damages your appliances? Well, our insurance carriers are offering some new coverages for these sort of losses.
Underground Service Lines
If you are worried about your underground service lines that connect to your home, you should add Service Line Coverage. This provides coverage for the lines that may be damaged by rust, wear and tear, freezing, leaks, and other perils. The coverage would extend to lines such as power lines, sewer lines, water piping and many others.
Equipment Breakdown Coverage
There are many things that can happen to your appliances, lights, computers, heating and air conditioning units. If you have Equipment Breakdown Coverage, these items will be covered in the event of a power surge or something as simple as mechanical failure. We believe this is a great coverage because it protects your everyday items.
When thinking about a sinkhole, you can just imagine your entire home being engulfed into the earth. Because of this, Sinkhole Collapse Coverage is now being offered. This would provide coverage to your home, other structures and personal property in the event of a sinkhole.
